The Fogarty Institute offers intellectual, physical and financial resources to early-stage innovators whose ideas have significant technical merit and a high likelihood of benefitting patients. Each year, our mentorship team selects one to three entrepreneurs from the many who apply, and we help them cultivate their innovations, moving them closer to deployment to patients. We provide them with everything they need: office/business functions, research and development resources and financial aid to help cover equipment, supply and staff costs. Our world-class mentors volunteer their time to work personally with these chosen innovators and entrepreneurs to show early proof-of-concept; provide early and ongoing clinical input into the innovation process; articulate a business plan; and secure venture capital, angel or government grant financing.
Our facilities, on the campus of El Camino Hospital, include a lab, offices, conference areas and engineering space. Our location and relationship with the hospital gives participants a unique opportunity to easily access state-of-the-art equipment, technology and an environment that was designed for collaboration.
Since our inception in 2007, we have worked with 20 medical device startups and mentored several international companies on medical device innovation. Five have already successfully spun off. We judge our success based on the quality of the company we help create, the legitimacy of the medical device, the ability to secure funding, the number of patients who will potentially benefit, and the probability of the innovator to make a long-term impact on healthcare.
"We strive to create an environment where we can cost effectively develop technology that directly benefits patients."
