Preeminent inventor and cardiac surgeon Dr. Thomas Fogarty launches the unique Fogarty Institute of Innovation at El Camino Hospital
September 25, 2007, Mountain View, CA: The Fogarty Institute of Innovation, an educational non profit organization that mentors, trains and inspires the next generation of medical innovators, opens today on the El Camino Hospital campus.
The founder and inspiration behind the Fogarty Institute of Innovation is Dr. Thomas J. Fogarty, internationally recognized cardiovascular surgeon and inventor. Dr. Fogarty and other prominent physician innovators and engineers will serve as the faculty, teaching and mentoring young physicians and engineers in the techniques and processes that will lead to the next medical breakthroughs in patient care.
"Dr. Fogarty's vision for the Institute is to provide a place where the creative process, so essential to all inventors, is nurtured and allowed to flourish," says Jon Friedenberg, CEO of the Fogarty Institute and a vice president at El Camino Hospital. "Physician inventors and engineers will have an extraordinary opportunity not only to be mentored by the most preeminent medical innovator of our time, but also to be able to do the hands on work it takes to bring an invention from an idea to reality."
Over the course of Dr. Fogarty's career, he has developed a proven method &ndsah; what he calls the "Fogarty method of innovation" – that can be taught to other physicians and engineers.
"We believe there is no other way to teach medical innovation than by demonstration," says Dr. Fogarty.
The Institute is located in a 4500 square foot space in the Melchor Pavilion on the hospital campus. Outfitted with a wet lab, dry lab and engineering space, the Institute also includes conference rooms, offices and teleconferencing facilities.
Over the past 40 years, Dr. Thomas Fogarty has acquired more than 100 medical patients, including the Fogarty balloon Embolectomy Catheter, considered the standard of the industry. He was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame in December 2001.
